Mercy College Library

Mercy College Library stands as a beacon of knowledge and learning, guided by its motto of making the best use of existing resources while embracing new knowledge.

Since 1964, the Mercy College Library has stood quietly at the heart of the campus — not merely as a repository of books, but as a living space where minds are awakened, ideas take shape, and the journey of lifelong learning begins. Guided by a simple yet profound motto — to make the best use of what we have while continually embracing new knowledge — the library has grown alongside the college, evolving to nurture the hopes and aspirations of every generation that passes through its doors.

What began as a modest collection has, over the years, evolved into a dynamic, technology-enabled centre of learning. A defining milestone in this journey came in 1992 with the construction of EKATHA, the dedicated library building established to commemorate the college’s Silver Jubilee. More than a mere structure, EKATHA stands as a symbol of shared knowledge — a vibrant space where students come together to explore, inquire, discover, and grow.

In 2006, the library took a decisive step toward modernization by implementing a fully automated system and introducing the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), enabling users to search, locate, and reserve books and journals with unprecedented ease. This advancement ushered in quicker access and more intuitive navigation through an ever-growing collection of print and digital resources.

The transformation continued in 2014 with extensive renovations that added a modern Computer Lab and expanded reading areas. These enhancements created a welcoming, technology-friendly environment, supported by reliable network connectivity and seamless digital access, ensuring that the library remained responsive to the evolving needs of its academic community.

Today, Mercy College Library harmoniously blends tradition with innovation. It stands as a welcoming haven for every kind of learner — from those who seek quiet corners for focused study to researchers engaged in rigorous scholarly inquiry.

Within its walls are thoughtfully designed spaces and collections to serve diverse academic needs: a Newspaper Reading Room to stay informed, a dedicated Research Room for serious scholarship, serene Study Rooms for uninterrupted concentration, and a Religious Section for reflection. The library also features an Internet and Computer Section for digital exploration, an extensive Reference collection, specialized Arts and Science sections, a Postgraduate Section for advanced study, and a Heritage Museum that carefully preserves and celebrates the rich legacy of the institution.

The library’s commitment extends far beyond the provision of books. Through its circulation and Book bank services, OPAC-based reservations, Current Awareness Service (CAS), Reprographic facilities, Journal article delivery, Plagiarism detection support, and Access to digitized Old Question papers, the library ensures that every academic need is carefully and comprehensively addressed. Users are also invited to recommend new books and journals, fostering a collection that grows in response to the community it serves.

Orientation programmes, and membership opportunities for external users further reflect the library’s conviction that learning should be inclusive, well-guided, and empowering for all. The Library has been functioning as teaching department from the academic year 2025-2026, offering a multidisciplinary undergraduate course that promotes information literacy, digital skills and research Awareness among students.

At Mercy College Library, we believe that a library flourishes when its community is actively engaged. We warmly welcome suggestions, value thoughtful feedback, and continually strive to enhance our collections, facilities, and services.

More than a resource centre, the library is a dynamic partner in teaching and learning — inspiring curiosity, nurturing independent thought, and steadfastly supporting every learner on their academic journey.
